About Us - How This Journey Began
Serendipity is the best way to explain how Island Style Bedding got started. It began with Pamela Tumpap, President of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, helping two businesses in May, 2014 - a sewing start-up and an individual making Hawaiian decor. The sewing start-up needed more business to stay in business and to create their dream of building a garment industry on Maui. The individual producing Hawaiian print decor wanted to expand her business, but could not do all the sewing herself and needed help. So, Pamela brokered the contract sewing to the sewing start-up who did a phenomenal job and hired Maui residents to help. Both businesses benefited, were happy with the work, and Maui people were employed. It was winning solution all around.
However, the owner of the decor line, was not able to market and promote the business as she had hoped and asked Pamela to keep it going in late-August, 2014. Pamela has worked with local manufacturers for over 25 years in her career and promotes Made In Maui products, quality items made by local hands and hearts and people who take great pride in their work. She saw how this decor shared the Aloha spirit of the islands and its people and added beauty and peace to people's lives. She loved the line and knew that residents and visitors of Hawaii would as well, so she agreed to do it. Pamela also wanted to keep the the jobs being created by this work in place and to assist with the development of a garment industry on Maui, which was becoming more and more possible through a burgeoning sewing industry.
But, there was a couple of hurdles to overcome. Pamela is employed full-time at the Chamber, which, like many, is a demanding job. And, she still is also developing another business on evenings and weekends - a sustainable botanical garden and ag tourism business called The Aloha Garden of Maui. With her very limited time, she truly needed to rely on the support and assistance of family and friends to add another element to her schedule and it was offered in spades.
It is truly a labor of love for all involved. Pamela credits her fiance Brian Kashima, the owner of Island Landscape-Maui's Premier Landscape Contractor, for his encouragement and financial backing. It allowed her to take on this burgeoning small business. Through his love, the talents and efforts of the Island Style Bedding team and sewers, and those who purchase Island Style Bedding decor, the company is growing and contributing to the Maui community. Pamela extends a warm Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) to all for being a part of this small business' success. "Together, we are making a positive difference in people's lives and enhancing our home and/or the home(s) of those we love. It is a beautiful thing that is only possible because of the amazing people involved and their dedication to this work."
The journey is just beginning. We hope you will stay tuned and continue to enjoy Island Style Bedding and share it with others.
